The Harsh Conditions Inside Malawi’s Poisons

By Peter Mseteka
The time was exactly 12 o’clock when we were reaching Mulanje prison on the 6th January of 2017.This was not just an ordinary trip but a trip to see the real life inmates are living in different prisons of Malawi.

The new year holiday has just ended and one of our friend has just been pardoned to freedom by the president, we have given him a warm welcome he accorded and he had time to narrate to us what prison life is really like. A group of six of us unemployed we have felt it a need that we can do something with the little we get.
Malawi prisons are are faced with numerous problems, there is overcrowding which poses both social and ethical problems. it socially unacceptable and unethical to treat human beings like animals, When human beings obeys a call of nature or takes a bath privacy is needed-but with prisons of Malawi that is not the case.Prison condition in many countries continues to give a case for a concern .

The Malawi prison service has been described as under pressure and at breaking point. According to a prison service spokesperson( Constable Mwambasaye) the vast majority of prisoners complaints are about the day to day realities of prison life-badly prepared meals , beating by senior prisoners, congested cells , filthy mattresses ,intimidation by staff ,poor health care, personal hygiene, lack of training and recreation and constructive activities .
